Here's my protip:

You can get a set of Cuisinart knives from Amazon for $20. They're not great and they'll dull easily if you use them a lot, but they'll get the job done.

Supplement those with a 3 piece Zwilling J.A. Henckels set for $130. These blades are high carbon stainless, so they'll stay sharp even if you use them every day, and they've got enough steel to ensure that they won't rust.

Note that Henckels now makes a lot of grades of knife. You don't want the stainless steel, because they won't hold their edge. You also don't want the forged high carbon steel. Those are superior, but too expensive. Leave those for the professionals. For a home kitchen, the stamped high carbon steel is fine.

I have a lot of knives ranging from cheap to handmade and I would recommend the $20 ceramic knife set below.
