US Mobile, three months for $30, inclusive of taxes and fees. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08YRVKCWR

I don’t know how this works in terms of doing this multiple times. You’d get a new number each time.

There are a bunch of 360 day Tracfone plans that come with 1200 minutes, 1200 texts, 1200 MB and 1 year service for around $30, see https://www.hsn.com/products/nokia-2760-flip-tracfone-bundle-w1200-mintextdata-and-w/20458236. Shows as $50 but you can get $20 off your first order with code HSN2022, see https://www.hsn.com/content/HSNCoupons/851# and you can create a new account every year. Extra data is $10 per GB and rolls over. This is probably your best option considering that you probably won't be there every month. Stick the SIM into whatever phone you choose. Many other choices that include a better phone as well, see https://www.hsn.com/shop/tracfone/10962?sort=price-low-to-high&skip=0&take=21&page=1&view=all.

You could sign up for Verizon's Page Plus service. $10 every 120 days, 6¢/minute, 5¢/domestic SMS, 20¢/international SMS, 5¢/MB, but that is expensive for data but OTOH, paying only $2.50 per 30 days may make up for that occasional data use. See https://www.pagepluscellular.com/plans/10-standard-pin/. Everything rolls over.

Other than that, the Red Pocket 360 day, 1GB/month, 1000 minutes/month, unlimited SMS, for $99 per year would work (choose Verizon), see https://www.ebay.com/itm/133051277200.

Amazon sells a 90 day, 5GB/30 day U.S. Mobile package for $30, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08YRVKCWR.

Another option is a Truphone data eSIM as needed. U.S., 2GB for 30 days is $10, 5GB for 30 days is $17. But I don’t know which network they use in the U.S.. Hopefully not T-Mobile. I know that back when they sold physical SIM cards it was AT&T. You could call them to ask. https://www3.truphone.com/consumer/esim-for-smartphone/#local For calls and texts you could set up a Google Voice number for free, or use non-free Localphone https://www.localphone.com/call/canada and pay 99 cents per month for an incoming U.S. number.

Also, check your phone's IMEI on the Verizon site because Verizon can get picky about phones, even iPhones, that could technically work on their network but that Verizon doesn't allow for some reason. So you might want to choose a smartphone/plan combo from HSN if your phone doesn't show up as compatible. See https://www.verizon.com/sales/digital/byod/selectMakeAndModel.html?type=smartphone.

Avoid T-Mobile MVNOs of course.

Personally, as long as Truphone is on AT&T, I'd go the data-only eSIM route, and use Google Voice for calls and SMS. Just buy a new eSIM before you head off to Vermont. No sense paying a monthly charge.

Airalo is another eSIM provider that is cheaper than Truphone, 3GB for 30 days is $11, and 1GB for 7 days is $4.50, see https://www.airalo.com/united-states-esim/change-30days-3gb. Supposedly it uses both AT&T and T-Mobile in the U.S.. Just give it a try next time you visit the U.S..

Buying a date eSIM each time you visit is almost certainly going to be the least expensive option. You can use a VOIP provider for incoming and outgoing phone calls, i.e. Google Voice, LocalPhone, etc.. Local phone has a $3 setup fee and a 99¢ per month charge and you can make and answer calls using their app, there is no need to forward calls to another phone number. The problem with Localphone is that you cannot receive SMS on your incoming number, for that you would need to set up a Google Voice number. You could always use your rented Localphone incoming number as the number that you forward Google Voice calls to so you could set up a Google Voice number in the U.S..
