CCC 2290 distinguishes alcohol and tobacco from drugs in CCC 2291. The first two are acceptable in moderation but drugs can only be used for medical purposes. The recreational use of drugs implies the concept of abuse because the act of drug abuse is an abdication of one's duty and vocation to be a person. There are Church documents that specifically identify marijuana as a drug that cannot be identified as a soft drug and must be rejected as CCC 2291 taught.

The teaching falls under the ordinary Magisterium, to which one still is obligated to accept and follow.
