When I said racket I really didn't mean ill will towards Enttec, I apologize for coming off that way, I should of probably used a different word. If I saw the Enttec founder at a bar I'd probably say "Your open dongles are a racket, genius idea dude."
Ask and you will receive here is a USB to DMX cable, which I believe is more ergonomic than an enclosure, that uses the FTDI chip and RS485 standard just like the Open - for $25 dollars. https://www.amazon.com/Lighting-Equipment-Control-Interface-Freesyler/dp/B078WLXSLW
If you plug this thing into any lighting software that supports the open, it will work.
Enttec is riding on their brand name and marketing.
EDIT: The only difference is that it doesn't use 5-pin, but I've never seen a DJ or hobbyist use an open without a 5-pin to 3-pin converter. If you can afford 5-pin lights, I would say you are likely not using the open. I would also argue that the 5-pin to 3-pin converter is an immediate extra cost that many consumers (who are in the market for the open) needlessly take on. The 5-pin configuration rather than bringing value to consumer is chosen instead more to enforce Enttec's reputation and willingness to adhere to standards. Again, I have no qualms with Enttec for doing this, I would do the same if my company's reputation was as high as theirs. They make great products (aside from the Open or pro, i like the mk2).
EDIT: Here is another dongle, that is isolated (the Open is not isolated), supports RDM (The open does not), and is a cable with xlr on one end and usb-c on the other for $22. https://www.doremidi.cn/h-pd-51.html
