I prefer to use the soft sided ones with the laces and the straps that go around the side. Mostly because the way the straps wrap around the side mimic the way trainer would tape your ankle when you twist it. I have used both the plastic kind and the soft kind and prefer these even though they are more of a hassle to get on and off.
