AT-LP120X > JDS Labs Atom Heasphone Amp $99 > Marshall speaker.

The headphone amp has RCA output on the back to continue the signal on to the speaker when headphones are not connected to the amp.

Which model Marshall?

Have you considered an upgrade to a larger pair of speakers?

Larger 5.25" mid bass driver Neumi BSP5 $159 for example.

Pass on most anything from turntable lab and pass on their bundles that don't make much sense.

Pass on the YU speakers that are pricey for what they are and you can do better for around the same cost. Pass on the tiny A2+ that are small computer type speakers for a small desk.

Both turntables are around the same entry level quailty. Do you need a fully automatic turntable?

Better setup for under $350:

  • Manual better turntable: AT-LPW30TK $175 has a built in phono preamp.
  • Plus powered speakers: Neumi BSP5 $139.

Or passive speakers and separate speaker amplification with Bluetooth:

  • Fosi Audio BL20A $68 mini amp. 3.5mm input instead of RCA output so use the correct cable or adapter.
  • Onkyo TX-8220 $199 stereo receiver.
  • Or if there is also a TV in the room an AV receiver with 4K HDMI starting at $229. Then you can now or later optionally add more speakers for movie and TV surround sound.

Passive speakers on sale:

Or floor standing towers, then you don't need to buy or build speaker stands:

Or 5 speakers for an AV receiver:

  • Jamo stand mount $199.

Plus speaker wire, pure copper oxygen free 16 AWG or optional thicker 14 AWG. Then How To Strip Speaker Wire and How to Install Speaker Wire.

Optional turntable upgrades:

  • Fluance RT82 $299 has auto stop and then an optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for lower wow and flutter and speed variation. Pass on the older RT80 and RT81 that lack the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better. Connect to a phono preamp to connect to the Neumi powered speakers or Fosi mini amp or AV receiver or the Onkyo stereo receiver or Douk X1 mini amp both have a built in phono preamp.
  • Drop + Audio-Technica Carbon VTA with a built in phono preamp adds a carbon fiber tonearm, a better stylus, VTA adjustment, a better stylus and replaces some plastic parts with metal over the AT-LPW30TK.

Or look for a used stereo or AV receiver and a pair of used passive speakers. What is a Craigslist or nearby zip code to search? Reply here or chat.

Buy these. Best you can get under $200.

They are self-powered speakers. Meaning the amplifier is built in… no separate amp required. They’ll connect to your phone over Bluetooth, and they also have RCA inputs and an optical input.

You might consider the Insignia ($130) from Best Buy. It is a decent starter and has adjustable counterweight and anti-skate. The AT LP60X will not harm your records and will get you started though. It just doesn’t offer much in adjustment or upgrades. The LPW30TK is a better option but would be tough on your budget because it doesn’t leave much for speakers. Speakers are vital to your sound quality. A refurbished AT LP60X and a pair of Neumi BS5P active speakers would be about $250 and a decent start on a tight budget. You could choose the Insignia and still be under budget. Vinyl is not a cheap endeavor.

Hopefully this will help:

Consider a better wired connection instead of temperamental Bluetooth.

Basic automatic AT-LP60X $105 > 3.5mm aux cable > 3.5mm Aux input on the soundbar.

Or a better manual AT-LPW30TK $175 > RCA to 3.5mm cable > 3.5mm Aux input on the soundbar.

Or if you won't have the turntable near the TV and soundbar then either turntable > included audio cable > pair of powered speakers and they have Bluetooth for playing music from your phone, tablet or computer:

Which model soundbar?

Even if the the soundbar had an analog input it may still convert the analog signal to digital for digital sound processing that most or many soundbars have.

The sound quailty may be limited by the limitations of a soundbar more than any analog to digital and digital back to analog to go to the built in class D amplifier conversions.

An under $25 analog to digital optical converter may be plenty sufficient for the sound bar.

If the soundbar sounds good to you then it's fine to start with.

A later upgrade for both the TV and the turntable would be an AV receiver with 2 speakers for music and optionally more speakers for movie, gaming and TV surround sound.

Maybe try a starter pair of powered speakers. 5.25" Neumi BSP5 $159. Then if they don't sound any better to you than the soundbar send them back to keep the funds for a later better speaker upgrade up to or past the quailty of the turntable.

Avoid cheap suitcases and all in ones.

What do you currently listen to CDs with?

For vinyl and CD, get a component turntable and a component CD player, connect both to a pair of powered speakers or a stereo or AV receiver or integrated amp that powers passive speakers. You can often find a used CD or DVD/CD player on Craigslist or at thrift shops for $20 to $50. What is a nearby town or zip code I can search for used options? Reply here or chat.

Your turntable and speaker budget is $400?

Pass on the Orbit with phono preamp at $269, it lacks a bunch of features and the cue lever costs another $40 for a total of $309.

AT-LPW30TK $329 $199 on sale with a built in phono preamp is a better value since it includes a cue lever, adds a speed switch (instead of moving the belt to the other pulley which sometimes has issues on the Oribit), adds adjustable anti-skate, adds a rotary dial on the tracking force adjustment and includes a better updated cartridge.

Pass on the basic 4" Edifier R1280T powered speakers that lack some features.

Better larger 5.25" Neumi BSP5 $159 add Bluetooth for streaming digital music plus a digital optical input.

If you want smaller 4" speakers for a small room then go a step up from Edifier R1280T:

The $127 4" Edifier R1280DBs are going to be a sound quality bottleneck for a $200+ turntable. Ideally spend just as much or more on the speakers as on the turntable. The Edifiers are often paired with the $105 AT-LP60X. If you must have under $200 powered speakers then get the better larger $159 5.25" Neumi BSP5.

Speakers are the most important component of the system by far in terms of determining how it sounds. The quality difference between some generic $80 Alibaba speakers and those Neumis is going to be pretty big... and consider that this is an expensive format. It can easily cost 35 bucks to buy a new album these days. So we're talking about the price difference of roughly the cost of two records, to make all your records sound better. It's a bargain.

Yep, avoid the cheap $5 mechanism in cheap suitcase, tabletop, standing or all in ones.

As long as that pink thing doesn't skip on your records it shouldn't damage them however the cheap mechanisms often have playback and skipping issues and don't sound very good so you are not getting much sound quailty out of the records that they are capable or providing.

What is your budget, $150, $200, $400 or more?

VPRO3100 $49 on sale or AT-LP60X $105 on sale both add a full size platter, a diamond tip stylus on an MM moving magnet cartridge connected to an RIAA phono preamp, all of which the cheap mechanisms lack.

Connect either one to powered speakers with an audio cable input for the turntable and Bluetooth for streaming music:

Compact 4" mid bass driver speakers for a small room or a desktop setup:

  • 4" Bestian SR4 $85 has analog, digital optical and USB inputs.

A good number of TurntableLab packages don't make much sense, they only have a 14 day return period when other stores offer 30 or even 60 days and they don't offer any free or flat rate return shipping that a good number of other stores offer if you need to return anything.

AT-LP60X $149 $105 has automatic playback and is easy setup beginner plug and play. Next step up $200 turntables add adjustable tracking force and a removable cartridge.

Plus powered speakers with wired RCA audio cable input for the turntable plus Bluetooth for streaming digital music:

Larger 5.25" Neumi BSP5 $159 for a small to medium size room should be better than the Edifier R1280DB.

Or also better 4" Klipsch KD-400 $329 $159 for a small room or desktop setup adds USB input for a computer and a subwoofer output.

If you must have the more basic Edifiers then 4" Edifier R1280DBs $159 $127 adds subwoofer output over the R1280DB however the the better speaker options above only cost $33 more to get better sound quality from the turntable.

You’re not going to do better for the money than that paring.

You don’t want to buy a bundle where the speakers come packaged with the turntable. The speakers in those sets are generic no-name Alibaba stuff… they won’t be as bad as the built in speakers in a Crosley but they will still be bad. And speakers are by far the most important piece of the setup in terms of sound quality, so bad speakers = bad system.

VPRO 3100 has a full size platter, is semi automatic and adds a diamond tip stylus, an MM moving magnet cartridge and an RIAA phono preamp, all of which the cheap Udreamer lacks.

The LG is an inexpensive shelf stereo system, it's not anything good.

Check if the AT-LP60 may need a new $15 stylus and a new $15 belt, not really worth buying if it does.

Maybe try a $100 offer for the setup if you can't afford anything better.

Better setup:

Turntables:

  • AT-LP60X $149 $105 on sale is easy setup beginner plug and play and has some improvements over the older discontinued AT-LP60 and it includes a new stylus, a new belt and a warranty.
  • AT-LPW30TK $329 $195 is a better manual turntable with a better tonearm with adjustable tracking force, has lower wow and flutter, an updated cartridge and a solid MDF plinth.

If you are looking for better sound quality then upgrade the speakers first. The basic while decent to start with for a low budget Edifier speakers are the sound quality bottleneck, it's not the turntable.

What is a nearby town or zip code I can search for used options? Reply here or chat.

After a speaker upgrade you could upgrade to an elliptical tip stylus for the AT-LP60X.

If you don't want to use a receiver or stack it under your turntable with a riser shelf or turntable stand then better powered speakers are an option:

5.25" mid bass driver powered speakers for a small to medium size room:

  • Neumi BSP5 $159 are a size up and a small to decent step up from the Edifiers.

4" mid bass driver powered speakers for a small room or desktop setup:

  • Klipsch KD-400 $329 $159 adds USB input for a computer and a subwoofer output and should be a decent step up from the Edifiers.

Or instead of the receiver you could get a mini amp to power passive speakers:

An affordable setup with just 2 items to buy is the AT-LPW30TK with built in phono preamp connected to 5.25" Neumi BSP5 $159 powered speakers with a built in speaker amp and Bluetooth.

Phono preamps can be built into the turntable, standalone separate, built into the speaker amplification or built into powered speakers.

Fine to start with if you already have the Panasonic CD micro system and it works well enough.

The speakers are inexpensive basic entry level so they are a sound quality bottleneck for the turntable and records. A speaker upgrade will give you better sound quality that the turntable and records are capable of providing. However you will need to also replace the main Panasonic CD micro system component.

Feel free to ask as may purchase and setup questions as you need, that's what this thread is here for!

The large 6.5" Klipsch RP-160 $549 MSRP should be the better speakers. The 5.25" Sony $199 MSRP have been on sale for $75 to $125 over the years and are not worth more than that compared to other options on sale.

If you don't want to cut and strip speaker wire you can get speaker wire with easy plug in banana plugs. Crutchfield, 6, 10, 15 or 20 feet, buy 2x for the 2 speakers.

If you don't want to use the receiver then you could get powered speakers to connect directly to the turntable:

  • 5" Neumi BSP5 $159 when back in stock.
  • Fluance 5" Ai41 or 6.5" Ai61 are $249 and $299.

With powered speakers you will still need to connect the turntable to the main powered speaker same as a AV receiver and then 1 included speaker wire connection that is already cut and stripped instead of 2 speaker wires with passive speakers.

Or get a mini amp instead of the receiver to use with passive speakers:

Or since the turntable has Bluetooth you could use the turntable with a Bluetooth speaker.

No halfway decent turntable includes the speakers, so if the speakers are included, that’s a major red flag… even if the speakers are in separate boxes rather than built in.

And while there are some hifi stores that sell turntables and speakers in a bundle, I would highly encourage you NOT to buy those bundles. Your speakers are BY FAR the most important component of your system—they are about 90% responsible for determining your sound quality—so just blindly grabbing whatever cheapo speakers the turntable store happens to have thrown into the bundle is usually going to get you mediocre sound.

If $200-300 is your budget for everything together, including speakers… here’s the best stuff you can get.

I recommend returning it if you can.

That MPK does have a diamond tip stylus on an MM moving magnet cartridge connected to an RIAA phono preamp and separate speakers so it is a step up from a suitcase or all in one player, however it is still a rather cheap turntable with a cheap tonearm that probably has noticeably high wow and flutter and the cheap speakers and built in speaker amp are another big sound quality bottleneck for the turntable and records.

Even a $105 AT-LP60X should have lower wow and flutter plus a pair of much better sounding larger pair of 5.25" Neumi BSP5 $159 powered speakers.

More turntables and speakers.

This is just general internet etiquette advice, not turntable advice... but in the future, please get rid of all that referral BS when you post your links. The question mark and everything that comes after it should not be pasted.

https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT-LP120XUSB-Direct-Drive-Turntable-Multimedia/dp/B07PP3MZ9D

https://www.ebay.com/itm/313923733591

https://www.ebay.com/itm/134061231196

See? Same links.

Anyway, don't buy any of those bundles. All three of those sets of speakers they come with are crap. I know you are saying that even the speakers in the Victrola were fine for you... but you did come here asking for advice, and I'm not going to tell you to buy bad speakers.

https://www.amazon.com/75-Watt-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers-Bluetooth/dp/B08LV4SMH9

Buy the LP120X separately, and then buy these speakers. They will give you much, much, much better sound. And they will be just as easy to set up too... there is no setup advantage to having the items sold as a bundle.

The LP120X is fine. It wouldn't be my choice, since there are other A-T models that are better for the same exact price. But it's not bad.

Best to avoid cheap suitcases and all in ones. You have the budget for a better turntable with better playback and better speakers for good sound.

The AT-LP60X $105 adds a diamond tip stylus on an MM moving magnet cartridge connected to an RIAA phono preamp for better sound over the cheap suitcases and all in ones with cheap ceramic cartridges and cheap built in speakers.

Plus better $79 to $159 powered speakers with audio cable input for the turntable plus Bluetooth for streaming digital music:

Compact 4" mid bass driver speakers for a small room or a desktop setup:

  • Bestian SR4 $85 has analog, digital optical and USB inputs.

Then later connect a CD or DVD/CD player you can often find at a thrift shop for under $25 and possibly a cassette deck too. Or even this $39 CD + Cassette player or $69 Sony that both have a headphone jack 3.5mm output to connect to the powered speakers with a 3.5mm to RCA cable. The Sony isn't much better than the AT-LP60X $105 on sale for almost half the cost. They are both automatic turntables that are easy setup beginner plug and play and lack adjustable tracking force.

A better turntable for the same cost of the Sony is the manual AT-LPW30TK $329 $195 that has a better tonearm with adjustable tracking force, lower wow and flutter, an updated cartrdige, and a solid MDF plinth. Balance the tonearm then set the tracking force and anti-skate.

The Kali are great pro studio monitors. Are you looking at pro studio monitors instead of home audio speakers because you will also be using them for recording, mixing or producing music in a home studio? Unified volume control for studio monitors would require a level controller, a mixer, a monitor controller or stereo preamp connected between the monitors and turntable.

Home audio powered speakers such as Neumi BSP5 for example have a single volume control for both speakers plus a remote control and connect directly to a turntable that has a built in phono preamp. Or connect the turntable to a stereo or AV receiver or mini or compact or integrated amp and a pair of passive speakers.

I know people asking for advice on buying turntables probably gets old

That is what this thread is for!

But, if this turntable is unlikely to last all that long, I'd rather replace it now while I can get a full refund and order something that will give better results for a longer period of time.

It may last as long as other turntables that cost around $250.

However you can get a turntable with lower wow and flutter, a better tonearm, and an upgraded stylus or cartridge for $50 less, the same price or $50 more:

  • AT-LPW30TK $249 $199.
  • AT-LP120X $349 $245 if you like the DJ style, however the AT-LPW30 does have a bit lower wow and flutter, is a better value and has a solid MDF plinth.
  • Fluance RT82 $299 adds auto stop. Pass on the older RT80 and RT81 that lack the new speed sensor that the RT82 has. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better. Plus a $15 or better phono preamp or connect to an amp or powered speakers that have a Phono input to a built in phono preamp.

Plus better powered speakers:

  • 4" Klipsch KD-400 $329 $159 adds USB input for a computer and a subwoofer output to connect to a powered subwoofer.
  • Or larger 5.25" Neumi BSP5 $159 for a medium size room.

Or if you like Edifiers, a step up from the R1280T:

  • 4" R1850DB $183 for a small room or small to medium size desk.
  • 5" R2000DB $263 for a small to medium size room or medium to large size desk.

Or a mini amp and passive speakers, scroll down past the turntables and powered speakers, are an option if you don't want a full size integrated amp or stereo receiver.

Do the speakers sound the same or better with other audio sources?

The sound quality bottleneck of AT-LP3 to R1280T is the speakers.

Larger 5.25" Neumi BSP5 $159 should be at least a bit better than the Edifiers.

Ideally spend just as much or more on speakers as on the $249 MSRP turntable or buy used for half the cost. Often a separate amp with passive speakers.

What is your speaker upgrade budget?

What is your room size LxWxH?

What is a nearby town or zip code I can search for used options?

Turntables and Speakers

Turntable: AT-LPW30TK $329 $199.

Plus powered speakers with audio cable input for the turntable plus Bluetooth for streaming audio.

Or better used options:

Or passive speakers and a used stereo receiver:

Used, compare to buying new speakers for over twice the price:

Towers, then you don't need to buy stands:

Or stand mount speakers with included stands are a good value:

Or more stand mount speakers:

Plus a stereo receiver to power the passive speakers:

Optionally add Bluetooth $22 or better WiFi Streaming with voice or app control + Bluetooth $22 or Airplay 2 with Siri + WiFi + Bluetooth $85.

Or an integrated amp with Bluetooth:

Plus speaker wire, pure copper oxygen free 16 AWG or optional thicker 14 AWG. Then How To Strip Speaker Wire and How to Install Speaker Wire.

Or a $40 starter setup with small speakers for a small room https://philadelphia.craigslist.org/ele/d/west-chester-small-inexpensive-stereo/7602743790.html optionally add Bluetooth or WiFi or Airplay 2 from above.

Better options:

Powered speakers: 5.25" Neumi BSP5 $159.

Or a Fosi or Aiyima mini amp or stereo receiver and better Monolith passive speakers I listed in the speaker link. Then you can later upgrade one part at a time if you want.

The older RT81 is not worth buying anymore since the newer upgraded RT82 for $50 more adds a $100 increase in performance and component value because it adds the new optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for much lower wow and flutter and speed variation and the speed won't drift since the sensor is monitoring the speed 400 times a second. The RT82 includes the OM10 cartrdige that is just as good as the newer version 2M Red on the RT83 so there is not much reason to get the RT83.

If you want lower cost then the AT-LPW30TK $329 $199 with a built in phono preamp instead of the RT80 or RT81.

Total budget is $600?

Options with powered speakers under $400 or around $500:

Separate amplification and passive speakers allows you to later upgrade one part at a time.

Connect either turntable to a mini amp or stereo or AV receiver:

  • Ayimia A01 Pro $59 mini amp plus the Bozak phono preamp if getting the RT82.
  • Fosi Audio DA2120A $125 mini amp adds digital inputs and a remote plus the Bozak phono preamp if getting the RT82.
  • Onkyo TX-8220 $199 stereo receiver has a built in phono preamp for the RT82.
  • Or if there is also a TV in the room an AV Receiver with 4K HDMI starting at $229+ and the Bozak phono preamp if getting the RT82 or $329+ with a Phono input for the RT82. Then you can now or later optionally add more speakers for movie and TV surround sound.

Passive speakers on sale in or over budget:

Or over budget floor standing towers, however then you don't need to buy or build speaker stands:

Plus speaker wire, pure copper oxygen free 16 AWG or optional thicker 14 AWG. Then How To Strip Speaker Wire and How to Install Speaker Wire.

Pass on the Yamaha R-S202 and 4" Klipsch R-41M speakers.

You're welcome.

Which model turntable do you have?

If the turntable will be plugged into a power outlet then you can't place the speaker(s) near the turntable to be plugged into the same outlet?

The room with the bookshelf doesn't have an outlet or you can't use an extension cord?

The speaker can't go anywhere else besides the bookshelf?

A pair of powered speakers will give you stereo separation for good imaging and sound stage:

If you can plug them into a power output with or without an extension cord. Then either connect to the turntable with an audio cable or over Bluetooth if you can't use an audio cable.

Buying used can compare to new options that cost 2 to 3 times as much.

The Klipsch speakers are just ok, though at least better than the Bose. I don't see many great used options or deals near you.

New Neumi BS5 $109 may be better than the Klipsch and also a step up from the Bose.

Power them with:

Plus speaker wire, pure copper oxygen free 16 AWG. Then How To Strip Speaker Wire and How to Install Speaker Wire.

Or get the powered version with a built in speaker amp Neumi BSP5 $159.

Turntables:

  • Automatic AT-LP3 $169 with a built in phono preamp.
  • Manual AT-LPW30TK $249 $175 with a built in phono preamp. Leaving the stylus running in the run out groove for minutes to half an hour won't hurt anything.
  • Manual Fluance RT82 $299 adds auto stop. Pass on the older RT80 and RT81 that lack the new speed sensor that the RT82 has. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better. Connect the RT82 to a $49 Technolink phono preamp.

Powered speakers with wired input for the turntable and computer plus Bluetooth for streaming audio:

  • 5.25" mid bass driver Neumi BSP5 $159.
  • 4" mid bass driver Klipsch KD-400 $329 $159 adds USB input for a computer and a subwoofer output to connect a powered subwoofer.

Or can you test the Onkyo receiver and Aiwa passive speakers with your computer or smartphone? Which model Onkyo and which model Aiwa? Once you know the Onkyo is working you could upgrade to a good $100+ pair of passive speakers. You can connect a $29 Bluetooth receiver to the Onkyo if you want it to have Bluetooth.

Any particular reason you only purchased a single speaker for mono listening?

For stereo music buy a second KRK Rokit 5 G4 plus a level controller, a monitor controller, a mixer or a stereo preamp for the pro audio studio monitors.

Or a pair of home audio powered speakers such as 5.25" Neumi BSP5 $159 with RCA input for the turntable and Bluetooth for streaming music.

Or a separate amp and passive speakers, scroll down past the turntables and powered speakers.

If you are looking at compact powered speakers with a built in speaker amp:

4" Edifiers may not have any lower bass than 4" Kanto.

4" Kanto YU4 should be better than 4" Edifier M4 and 4" Edifier R1280DBs.

If you want small speakers for a smallish size room and you want lower bass you can feel then add a powered subwoofer. Kanto YU4 and Edifier R1280DBs have RCA subwoofer output to connect to a powered subwoofer. Edifier M4 do not. Edifier M4 are more intended as desktop speakers usually to use with a computer or pro audio equipment.

Or for a bit more impact in a small to medium size room go with larger 5.25" powered speakers:

5.25" Neumi BSP5 $159.

5.25" Kanto YU6 add RCA subwoofer output so you can now or later add a powered subwoofer for lower bass you can feel.

Good quailty good value starter setup:

Speakers: 5.25" Neumi BSP5 $159 have a built in speaker amp with audio cable input for the turntable plus Bluetooth for streaming audio.

Separate components:

Turntable: Fluance RT82 $299 has auto stop. Pass on the older RT80 and RT81 that lack the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better.

Stereo Receiver: Onkyo TX-8220 $199 has a built in phono preamp.

Passive speakers on sale:

Or floor standing towers, then you don't need to buy or build speaker stands:

Plus speaker wire, pure copper oxygen free 16 AWG or optional thicker 14 AWG. Then How To Strip Speaker Wire and How to Install Speaker Wire.

Speaker Placement

If you want powered speakers then consider larger 5.25" Neumi BSP5 $159.

YU4 and R1280 are smaller 4" mid bass driver speakers for a small room, rather small for an open floor plan.

Or go with larger 6.5" speakers for a large room.

I recommend separate amplification and passive speakers, scroll down past the turntables and starter powered speakers. Monolith, Polk, Wharfedale....

An AV receiver $229+ with 4K HDMI if you want to replace the soundbar for both the turntable and TV, then you can later add more speakers for movie and TV surround sound. Or 5x Jamo Studio Series S 803 speakers on sale. Optionally now or later add a powered subwoofer.

Amplification with a built in phono stage preamp for the RT82 or EVO:

  • Aiyima T5 $159.
  • Onkyo TX-8220 $199.

The Neumi that sharkamino recommends are better than the Edifier.

The edifier are fine for now, but if you might upgrade the LP60 at some point then the neumi would be better
