I prefer to have a few different cards of varying size for different situations and different cameras. They mostly live in my camera bag in a 6-card container (kind of like this but cheaper).
The benefits are that I always have extra storage on hand in a pinch, and it's a good idea to change cards in case of failure.
A drawback is that you need to make sure you're transferring images off of the card to your safe storage location then format the card so it's fresh and you don't accidentally end up with multiple copies of images.
It's a best practice to copy all files to your storage location, then format the card from the camera. This keeps write times nice and fast, and ensures the safest data transfer methods.
