The accelerant in the spray paint probably disolved it. Best bet is to use a spray that is intended to go on models for finish work. It's an acrylic based spray, but that does necessarily mean it is also safe to go on acrylic. See if the label says otherwise, though. I use vallejo varnishes with no issues.
