Absolutely!!!! So, I started off with a cheap kit I found on Amazon, which I would recommend to see if you even like doing wood burning.
This is the starter kit I tried out and honestly isn't bad and it comes with a LOT of nibs (metal tips)!:

I ended up loving it! So as an early Christmas present I purchased a Dual TRUArt gun, they run about $200.00 usd on Amazon, but I have to say this gun is amazing!!
Which is this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B06Y5PXZ31?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
Before you begin, you want to sand the area you want to burn.
After you sand you'll then need to put your image on your "canvas".
So, there are many ways to place your image on your wood. Anything from stencils, to free hand, to using carbon paper to print your picture and then you can transfer that image to your slab of wood.
I recommend always copying the image onto your slab first in pencil or carbon paper!
In this case, I stenciled the outline of Santa's head and free handed his face in pencil before I burned it on.
I'm still pretty new, the trick is to go slow and light handed or you'll make textures into the wood and it'll make your drawing look uneven. You also don't want your gun to be too hot, as it can actually ruin the tip and melt them! (And don't use sandpaper to clean your tips, I use a damp sponge to get residue off. )
IMO, I like texture in some instances. If you look through my history, you'll see my first project and I think my flower came out really cool!
I also use a stylo dremel if I make mistakes to kind of sand out the area! Not necessary, but I definitely reccomend!!

Not mandatory, but super handy!

I also have been sealing my work after with polyacrlyic, but I've only done indoor pieces so far! But there are different sealers for indoor/outdoor.
I hope what I said helps!! And looking forward to seeing your work. :)
I use the truart professional duel pen burner. I've had mine for 4 years now and I love it! Mine came with 25 tips and I've purchased multiple others since then. Love that the truart can use other brand tips as well!
