Yeah, won't do much if there's a huge burst. But if there's a little leak that is gone undiscovered, my hope is that we'd find a puddle on the mat and not be absorbed into the wood.

The reason I like the idea of a mat is because of a stupid mistake I made previously. I added a hair catch in to our current bathroom sink. To add it I had to remove the stopper, but I didn't realize I needed to screw back in the stopper mechanism to the pipe (yes seems obvious written out, but at the time I was focused on adding the drain stopper). Lesson learned there.

I like the idea of a leak detector. The Moan Smart Water Leak Detector looks good with the main shut off. Thanks for the tip.
