I recently bought a Z6ii switching from a Canon DSLR. My main photography hobby is macro with small, live wildlife (insects, spiders, etc.), so I had a Canon EF 100mm L, and now have a Z MC 105mm S. I also had a Yongnuo YN600EX flash and used this 6x5" diffuser.

I got rid of that Yongnuo with the old camera so I'm now flash-less and in need of a new solution. I could just re-buy the for-Nikon equivalent of the same Yongnuo flash, but I wasn't a big fan of my old setup. It worked fine but was impractical between having to insert/replace 4 AA batteries and attaching the diffuser so I'm looking for something more practical without sacrificing performance.

I've been looking at Godox units and already like that they come with a battery pack instead of using AAs.

I've heard the Godox V1 does a good job for macro and is compatible with my focal length. And while it's very rare that I have a use for a flash outside of macro, I guess it'd be nice to have a versatile unit such as that.

I'm also always curious about these more specialized lights that attach to the front of the lens rather than the shoe, but that's more expensive because they need a control station that I'd have to buy separately. And that's fine if it's worth it. But is it worth it?

And the middle of the road option would be a ring flash, that comes with the control station.

So to recap, I'm between:

  • Godox V1 conventional flash with the round bulb, so not that different from my old setup
  • Godox MF-R76 ring light/flash
  • Godox MF12-K2 with the two flashes that clip to the front of the lens + separate Xpro II control station (more expensive and more complex than the other two options)

I can buy any of those but I'd need to know why the MF12-K2 would be worth it. Those of you with the same hobby know that good lighting is critical to good macro, logically 2 lights is better than 1 but... I have no experience with a setup like that :)

I'm also open to other brands of course (just not 1st party due to price) but Godox seems to have the right products for the right price and I like the battery pack idea, so I'm not considering Yongnuo and Neewer due to having to use AAs.

Please share any thoughts/suggestions/opinions :)
