I just got into the custom cable game, too, and had to buy tools. I didn't do as much research, but I think I made out ok.
I bought these that look suspiciously similar to the MDPC-X. I obviously don't have the MDPC-X to compare to in person, nor do I know enough to judge the relative quality of my crimps, but I do have functioning cables. The tool feels solid and well built, with no slop or play. I would be comfortable recommending this to someone else.

I also bought these, and again I have no quality tool to compare to, but I'm less impressed. The hinges all feel slightly sloppy and loose, and the amount of insulation removed is sometimes inconsistent - but that could also be the fault of the wire, and the insulation quality? I would definitely recommend getting this type of tool, but maybe not this specific product.

I also bought what I thought was the same pin remover from two different listings. One arrived bent and continued to bend, frequently failing to remove pins, and breaking after 4 days of use. The other I've been using for over a week, has never bent, has never failed to remove a pin.
