You can use battery powered strip lights like this with aluminum channel like this.

Downsides: You won't get the exact animation you want and you will be flying through batteries if you use it much. As in replacing them every day if you want them on all day long. You also have to find a way to hide the battery pack and at that point it's better to just get one with an AC adapter.
