Those clips have such a tiny amount of metal no wonder they corrode so quickly in saline.
Mrdmrd has a good suggestion. The idea is to use a set of Amrex sponges, such as these and a matching pair of banana plugs ("no solder" screw ons or crimp.) Here's an example of the plugs: amazon.com/Bananaplug
If you're set on using clips and sponge cloth at least switch to a beefier type like this (which would still need a banana jack to attach): www.amazon.com/Alligator-Clip
If you use the more robust alligator clips you'll have to take care to avoid skin contact with the metal. Very unpleasent.
I do recomend the Amrex and banana plug. It's closer to what the papers describe and easier to assamble, use and maintain.
