There's definitely a lot of misinformation. The riser cards I used are these but DON'T use the SATA connector that comes with it. It went straight into the trash.

I plugged in each of the riser cards with the 6-pin (from 8-pin) directly to the PSU to the VGA port. You want to make sure each GPU is powered with its own cable for the safest setup. And also, both the riser card & the GPU should be powered from the same PSU (people have fried the riser card this way including the GPU) if you're using more than one PSU which I am.
Right now first rig is running 6 1080 Ti's, two 1000w platinum PSU's. This is running on a 20A circuit to keep everything efficient at 80% power usage on both PSU and the circuit itself.
People will argue about daisy chaining the powers but at the end of the day setting up an expensive rig and cheaping out on cables to save few bucks is just not worth the risk :)
