Thanks! I think I got a decent deal for my needs too.
But contrarian ValorantDanishblunt suggests I should have instead upgraded my 12yr old, free to me, Dell Precision m6800 to an i7 and a GTX 1070 MXM graphics card which would seem to run be about $300-$800 depending on the deals I might have found on eBay, not including the time and effort to tear down and install the CPU and GPU. After that, I'd have this Harambe-sized frankenbeast laptop which in terms of raw performance from Geekbench, suggests I'd have about the same performance as an average SB2 i7 which runs for $733 currently on Amazon (refurb, excellent condition).
So yeah, I could have spent that much and upgraded my (free to me) Dell, or spent that much and gotten an SB2 i7 with the GTX1050... or I could enjoy my base i5 7th gen SB2 that I got for a pretty decent deal, with 90 days even of MS support, and weighs about 3 Courics less than the m6800.
