I love the Keith McMillan QuNexus - http://www.amazon.com/Keith-McMillen-Instruments-K-708-Controller/dp/B00BBU0350 - portable, rugged (nay indestructible), and a ton of features that you can turn off if you want.

(I also have their QuNeo - the 4x4 pad + frobs, and don't like it. I'm not smart enough to program it to behave reasonably.)
