I'd go with a Canakit, but not the complete one. This version is only the case, Pi, and power cable for $50. Your complete starter kit comes with a generic SD card and HDMI cable for an extra $20 which you can get better versions of for around the same price or cheaper (or you have an HDMI cable laying around).

Raspberry Pi kit will be fun too. Tell him to set up a Pi Hole or Retro Pi.

BTW, if you want to save a about 30 bucks, there is also this one from CanaKit. I ordered a Pi Zero kit from them directly once and they are reputable. The only difference is no controllers, difference case (with out the fan), and the PSU is 5v 2.5a (without the button/switch). Also, you will probably have to write your own image of Retropie to the Micro SD but that is easy, many YT videos on that.

Lastly you could move down to this kit from CanaKit. You would need to add an SD card but this 32gb card is only 10 bucks...puts you down to 60, saving about 40 bucks from the original. Its all about what YOU want though. :D let me know if you have any questions.
