Since you're a beginner, you'll need a soft brush, medium brush, hard brush, durag, water-based moisturizer, a hand mirror, and pomade.
Brush A LOT everyday. The more you brush, the faster you'll train your hair. Start your brush sessions with a medium brush, and end with a soft brush. When your hair gets longer and you start wolfing, that's when you'll switch to your hard brush.
Start your sessions by applying a moisturizer to your hair, not much though. Then start brushing with your medium brush. When you get close to finish brushing with your medium brush apply your pomade and brush it in. Then finish your sessions with a soft brush. Then put your durag on. Make sure you apply pomade every other day.
Once you get waves, stop using pomade. It's not good for your hair longterm. Start using a moisturizer, Jamaican black castor oil, and a mixture of coconut oil & tea tree oil for your scalp health. Mix 3 tablespoons of coconut oil and about 5 drops of tea tree oil an keep it in a glass container used to hold oils. And don't believe people when they say oils moisturize your hair, because they DO NOT. You need an actual moisturizer.
When it comes to wash and styles, search "Wash & Styles for Beginners" on Youtube to see how its done. Wash your hair once a week as a beginner & twice a week once you get waves.
