I bought this as an EDC-type knife and I'm super satisfied with it. 5 years later, the blade lock isn't very reliable, but that's what you get with a cheap knife. it holds a nice edge.
alternatively, I use a mora. Not retractible, but it's cheap and it's my "kicker" knife. Sharp, durable and dependable.
This Mora knife? Can't argue with a $15 knife, looks fairly nice.

Throw a couple bics in, some garbage bags, some paper towels, and a pack of wetwipes. You can add a firesteel, magnesium bar, and firestarters if you want. Fishing line, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap. Headnet, bugspray, hand/footwarmers depending on the season.
Med kit. Sleeping bag. I don't like the plastic signal mirrors so I pack a make up compact mirror that is pretty rugged. Throw a fork and spoon in. An emergency hand crank radio. A compass, maps. Hand sanitizer. A towel. A folding saw. A water bladder. These are all options to carry.
Wool socks, insulated hat for winter, brimmed fishing hat for summer, leather gloves to handle hot food or work in. Base layer to wick sweat away. Hiking boots. Flashlight.
I tried to list just the basics but it kinda got away from me there.
The classic Companion is a sore dick deal - you just can't beat it!!
Alternatively:
LightMyFire 2.0 Swedish firesteel
Or a good wool blanket or sleeping bag to keep in your car in case you get stranded in the cold.

For EDC/general cutting purposes(and gorgeous old-school looks), a small high-quality folding knife from France: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004AMY6GS/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1485034837&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=opinel+carbon&dpPl=1&dpID=51baQV0eVVL&ref=plSrch
If you want a more "modern" pocket knife that is still affordable, I recommend something from the American masters of Cold Steel like: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00U1I875Q/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8 (Gotta give some lovin' to that Aus8A japanese steel and the Scandinavian grind)
I can recommend all three, though I own only the first 2. Have fun and stay sharp!
