I read that as "a lav or boom is better". And he'd be right. But...
2) "I don't use stereo for dialogue."
( should you tell him to mute a channel for mono or should I? :)
The H1n seems a solid unit to me and great bang for the buck. I found a wind furball thingy for it for $10 US :

but I dunno what sort of cheaper alternatives there might be or what you can improvise. I just know that small condenser elements in the wind WILL get wind noise.
