i thought theyre supposed to be silent unless the needle was bent and that it was an early sign of hard drive failure. i mean like loud clicking and ticking, not just like small sounds. also ill copy the message i wrote to hspindel to clarify -
no, let me try and explain again. I had 3 14TB External hard drives. - https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-14TB-External-Drive/dp/B08XKMBTXH- the old versions of these are smr i believe. and i used to storemedia on them and edit videos in adobe premiere pro. when i would open avideo file and scroll forward and backwards on the navigation bar, theexternal hard drive would click, also would tick when loadingthumbnails. i thought it was the needle hitting the head. these externalhard drive were a cheaper version with larger storage capacity, so Itried buying a couple but I didnt like them, and thought the hard driveswere failing because of the noises they made. So I decided to buy aNAS. I bought a Ds932+ and 4x 16TB ironwolf pro hard drives andisntalled those. Im asking if I edit 4k video files that are beingaccessed from the NAS, can it damage those files or the drives they arein?
I have one of these. Seagate Expansion 14TB External Hard Drive HDD - USB 3.0, with Rescue Data Recovery Services (STKP14000402) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08XKMBTXH/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_2T66B0QHR14KSBNKYFE6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 It works great for playing back even 60gb Blueray remuxes. My only issue is it automatically goes to sleep after a certain amount of time and has to spin up before access. Maybe 10 - 15 seconds. It transfers at 250mb/second from my pc.
