I just recovered from major surgery followed by radiation treatment and these things helped me a lot.
- Make sure she has her electronics and that she can be connected to her friends when she feels like it. (Power strip, wifi extender).
- Arrange the room for her in a way that she likes that makes it easy for her to get meals in bed (if needed) and help to get out of bed.
- Get her a body pillow (it's a long one used for pregnancy) - it will help her sleep. She will have to be "immobile" sleep in a certain position and the body pillow will help her find that position. She may want two - to "cocoon" her in.
- Buy her TWO of these -- they stay hot a long time and will help her re-regulate her body temperature. I boil the water in a tea kettle and they are still pretty warm the next day. She can stash them in between her pillows if they are too hot for her just to keep the bed warm.
- Buy a mylar sheet to place between the mattress pad and the mattress (with the fitted sheet over it - this reflects body temperature back and will help her stay warm).
- Here is the quilted mattress pad
- Sometimes after major surgery people get muscle cramps all over their body. If it doesn't go away after a few days ask the doctor if she can drink an electrolyte drink with potassium. This stuff rocks. I literally couldn't walk and muscle relaxers / nerve modulators and PT didn't help. Within 1 day and a half of drinking this 4 times I had some relief. After several days I am still sore - but I can walk unassisted without pain. It's very high in potassium and tastes terrible but you can put it in juice. Max dosing is 3 times a day...
- I also really liked the bamboo sheets - they are super soft and warm.
I wish her, you and your family a good outcome.
I like this powder from Adapted Nutrition.
