I went to Joann fabrics and purchased some black out curtain. Its white with a darker grey backing. I don't remember the name of it but they had several options. This is the closest I could find. I think it's beneficial to go to the store (once it's safe to do so) and actually feel the fabrics. I like the one with the black out backing because its firm and holds its shape. I asked them to put it back on a cardboard roll for me (they usually have extras from the end of old rolls) and I keep it on that. I purchased this backdrop holder and the roll just fits over the rod. I keep it in place with clamps. I purchased these clamps from Homedepot because I like them more and they fit in the roll better.
I absolutely LOVE it. It is wrinkle free, which is the best part, in my opinion. Plus when I'm not using it it just gets rolled back up. The black out backing ensures that the backdrop is TRUE white, whereas muslin or cotton backdrops can be thin and allow light to pass through, creating shadows, etc.
I think the fabric would be perfect for being thumb-tacked to a wall, but I don't have any large blank wall space (plus I like the support stand because I can hang hangers right on it). I would just be sure to store on the roll and not fold up because getting the creases out sucks.
I have ordered multiple muslin photography "backdrops" from amazon. Um, they are just large (overpriced) pieces of cotton. And they come in a wrinkled mess. After several washes, and many attempts at ironing and steaming, I cannot get all the wrinkles out. Plus when I store it folded up I have to re-iron it before each use. I honestly hate it. Because its just a piece of cloth is has movement and doesn't lay perfectly flat, sometimes creating weird shadows in my photos. If this is what you want, I would still go to a fabric store and purchase an extra wide piece of fabric as it will end up being much cheaper.
I have also used this in the past. It was great! But I could only use the same piece a few times. I got through the roll in about one month.
Hope this helps!
