I know this isn't all too common, but get one that has a light on it. It makes so much difference. I have this 20x hand lens, and every time I break it out people go bonkers.

If you don't like the 20x, this 10x is the best one I've seen, or anything similar.

Also, get a leather carrying case for them, and fish a string through the case so you can wear it around your neck.
