Buy this one...plug and play, in Windows 8 no less, and works flawlessly
The price is salty, though this is a 1st party adapter.

Considering most pro players use Xbox 360 Les Pauls, I'm going to assume they're fine.
That's crazy! I have purchased one and at least two of my friends have purchased one and they work. There are official microsoft recievers, take a look here. That's Microsoft's Amazon store, so it better be official! But yea, now that I'm doing an amazon search a I see a ton of generics out there, that could be a real headache.
Another thing to note, the 360 controller does not use bluetooth, it's some kind of proprietary wireless tech, thus the need for an extra receiver.
I'm really looking forward to having the steam controller, an official PC controller that developers can target.
I too am awaiting the steam controller. The demo where they where playing civ 5 with it /drool . i have a wireless adapter for 360 its this one i ordered one or two before it and they did not work, but this one does and it even says microsoft but the manual says otherwise haha
I always recommend buying Dark Souls on sale if you don't already own a wired Xbox 360 controller (or a wireless USB dongle for your PC). The game is near unplayable with M&K. Also, when you get it, install the DSFix mod. It unlocks the framerate (broken with most recent Dark Souls patch), resolution, and let's you customize all sorts of things like SSAO, Anti-aliasing, and DoF.
If you happen to have some Xbox 360 wireless controllers, Microsoft makes a dongle for your PC that allows up to 4 controllers to connect. It's ~$20 and requires at LEAST Windows Vista. If you're still on XP...it's 2012, don't be on XP anymore.
Also, and I'm not %100 sure about this, you can get a Bluetooth dongle for your PC and use a PS3 controller. The PC version comes with only the keyboard icons and Xbox controller icons, but DSFix allows you to replace textures in the game, letting you replace the button icons with PS3 icons. I've even seen a lot of mods to add a variety of Logitech controller buttons.
The folks over at /r/darksouls are really good about giving you information about the game without spoiling anything for you. Also, if you do decide to pick up the game, /r/darksoulsmods has a TON of community created retextures, from recolors to health bars that make them easier to see, to retextures of shields that make them look straight out of Zelda, pretty much anything you want is there.
NOTE ABOUT THE WIRELESS DONGLE: I have a friend that got a knock off one that was a few dollars cheaper. It came from some Chinese company. It works perfectly fine on his computer, but he did have to install some drivers that I had some issues with on my computer. Just so you guys know.
xbox 360 wireless controller plugged in with the usb cable and no luck due to me not having bluetooth capabilities.
Xbox 360 Wireless needs a proprietary wifi dongle... it's not bluetooth. It says Windows, but I've used it on linux with xboxdrv: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HZFCT2 I've never had any luck with it being wired either.
Personally, I enjoy the Sony DS4, but it does require a bluetooth connection. You can buy a generic usb dongle for cheap though.
bluetooth receivers will NOT work with Xbox 360 guitars/controllers. You need an Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver. Nothing else will work.
I'm guessing you're trying to use the regular 5-fret guitars.
That dongle only works with Guitar Hero Live guitars.
To connect anything else, you'll need one of these. I'm sure you could find one cheaper if you look around, that's just the link I have handy. The bonus is it also works with any other wireless 360 controllers, which would be useful if you have other games you want to play with a gamepad instead of KB+M.
They haven't been manufactured for a loooong time. The best you can do is to go on Ebay or similar sites and hope to find something. If you live in the US several people have recommended that you go to Goodwill a few times a week or so and see if they get anything - might take a while but you might cop a great deal.
You could get a wired xplorer for the PC, but you could basically use ANY Xbox 360 controller if you purchase a Microsoft Wireless Reciever adapter for your PC. On Amazon they're about 20 bucks, and you could get an off-brand (which I use) for just like 5-10 dollars.
Microsoft Wireless Reciever (Amazon): https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000HZFCT2
So you can go for an Xplorer, Les Paul or any other guitar as long as it's for the Xbox 360. Sometimes you make good deals, I got 2 unused (pretty much) Xplorers the other day for only 15 bucks, but stuff like that doesn't come around often.
Good luck!
Someone mentioned that it has to be wired. If you already have wireless ones just buy a dongle: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000HZFCT2
in my experince, sadly this is the only thing i had work for guitars for windows

you can MAYBE find cheaper with lower latency, but im just now switching to a wii guitar with a raphnet adapter
