This is how I do it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_SfOuCb1BJFV3P
Note that this will require gutting a standard dock, as it is just a replacement shell.
There are dock options that are just shells that allow you to install the stock dock motherboard.
I’ve been using this one for years. No risk of bricking since it used all stock electronics. The only difference is the housing for the mobo.
I use this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071YVC3NJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 in conjunction with a "USB-C Extension Cable" It removes having the actual "Switch dock" visible on your entertainment center- I just have a nice looking black USB C cable to the side. It uses your actual dock's-main board so yes you have to take apart your dock to use it.
*This is the USB-C Cable I use in conjunction with the dock https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XH9JRY5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 *
The reason I did this originally- was I use a decent sized rubber grip on my switch https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07X6F29C2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Since I have bigger hands- and I HATE pulling cases on and off devices so I wanted to find a way to "dock" my switch without having to remove it from the grip. Thus I bought that previous dock- moved over the board- and realized it makes my set up "cleaner" looking with the little dock
Pros- Dock not visible on the entertainment center- Using the official "Nintendo" dock board so worries about third party USB power management- You no longer sit the switch "in" the dock so less scuffing - switch remains cooler with air moving around it since it's not squeezed in the dock. SUPER PORTABLE. I mean it pretty much turns the dock into a cable-
Cons- You do have to disassemble your official Nintendo dock to move over the board- If you're moving around the dock a lot- you can pull the USB extension cable out of the dock- *If you use the grip* removing your joycons is a pain- but I never remove my grip or joycons which is why this was the best method for me.
Here are the things I have (some multiples of):
Extra dock. I find it much easier to just have a 2nd dock in my living room.
Controller Charge dock. Mine is Mario themed, pretty sure it came from Gamestop. It likes me dock and charge my Pro Controller and my 2 joycons.
Pro Controller. I wasn't going to get one of these, then got a deal on one. Worth it, but a 3rd party one can be just as good.
Screen protector. I don't use my Switch in handheld very often. But I wasn't going to risk the screen.
Case. I have a slim case that wraps around the switch itself. It won't let me dock with it on, but I like... because...
Special dock. I have a special dock set up, it consist of THIS and THIS . Technically only the 2nd option is needed, but having a smaller dock on my desk was a major need back when I 1st got my switch. The extender lets me lay my switch down. Nothing to knock over, also I feel I can keep the vents better open to air flow.
Game case . I've had many different ones as I gain more games. This one is my go to one now.
