I understand what you're saying and it's great to hear that you were mindful of the way you function enough to find a way around it. I'm a psychologist and I covered this approach in my book on using simple psychology to overcome procrastination.

Your idea about knowing you could use that win (in a form as you say, inoculation) instead of being stuck in a spiral of self-shame shows a similar version of the process I think works best in the long-run. That process is emotional awareness, followed by acceptance and finally integration of that change in your everyday life.

Thank you so much for reading, glad you like it and find it useful! I'm a psychologist and an author, so I've been examining the role of emotions for some time, especially in terms of productivity - that is why I wrote a short book on how simple psychology can help in overcoming procrastination. Hopefully, these ideas about self-awareness and emotional acceptance end up being something useful to you in the long run and not just today! :)

Absolutely, any creative process is integrative in this sense and asks for plenty of different (and even seemingly non-related) experiences. Of course, this is not the case for everyone, but for the majority, there needs to be this blend of working, not working and everything else to get to a point where they're both productive and feel good about the work/themselves.

That's true as well, but from my experience as a counseling psychologist, people sometimes have a lot of trouble making that fun stop when they want. That in turn stops it from being fun at all. That's one of the reasons I wrote a short book on overcoming procrastination. It's key idea is that overcoming those unwanted and prolonged spells of wasting time includes a process of recognizing, accepting and integrating the same behavior and emotional need. Then can wasting time become fun again!

The key element of this process is to first be aware of any emotion you might feel at the present moment. This includes nothing else but awareness, which should be followed by acceptance. All of the feelings you have are there for some purpose and all of them are useful to you as you grapple with reality (regardless of what type of life you live). Acceptance is not easy because we tend to negatively judge ourselves when we notice that, for example, we're procrastinating because we're anxious.

But, this is the way you gradually overcome any emotional process - mindfulness and acceptance. It's an easy idea but one that takes both time and effort. However, eventually, it reaches the place of integration, where you realize and accept that a part of you procrastinates in some circumstances, but you still manage to use that part for something that you actually want. In other words, as you learn to be okay with procrastination, you slowly get to understand it and thus the entire behavior slowly goes away.

If you want to find out more about this process, check out my book on the same subject https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CXBRSVM

Thanks!
