For all those recommending a Thermapen (yes, that $90 one from ThermoWorks) instead, I can't disagree more whole heartedly. I've gone through three in the past 15 years - and I'm easy on them. Every single one of them eventually doesn't automatically turn on when I rotate the probe. $250+ worth of instant read thermometers, all dead and useles
They always lose their ability to turn on when I open it. I'll be out on the grill, and constantly opening and closing and opening and closing them trying to find some magic sweet spot where it turns on. It's a pain in the ass and has happened to every one I've owned after just a few years of use.
Yes, I've changed the batteries, yes I don't abuse them, yes I've ever tried taking them apart trying to figure out exactly what went wrong with them.
My wife actually forbids me from buying them anymore because I get so fucking frustrated that I spend all this money on a temperature probe that only lasts a few years of once-a-week use. Now they just sit in a drawer unused because I can't bring myself to throw away a $90 piece of plastic.
I've been very happy with a $20 model from Amazon that has a little light, a magnet, accurate to a single decimal, and hasn't given me a single issue in 24 months. Plus it's cheap enough that if I leave it out in the rain I'm not obsessing over it and treating it like it's a delicate piece of porcelain, like I did with the Thermapens.
