This post got edited by mods and removed. I really like the comments I got on this, so posting what the post was here for my own archiving.

"Yo, hello!" >< My names Zeek, and I've always been a fan of vocaloid, just not really vocal about it, until recently. (Puns!)

As I was building different setups of my alpha vocaloid rig, I simply fell in love with the general concept of hologram concerts. It's so painfully complicated, and hard, and expensive, and demanding, that I am legitimately enjoying the process and learning as I go. Depending on the success of the first concert, (and by this I mean, not profits, but general entertainment value) I would love to partner up with Yamaha or 'Internet Co. LTD' to have competing vocaloid concerts to Cryptons current monopoly, as well as bring more vocaloids to the west. But! That's all far, far away, and I still have to get on my feet first! I can't keep taking hits to my wallet trying different things, and failing at others. So, I've been reaching out to reddit on any advice anyone would be willing to share.

As a note, I'm writing this as: A request for help, a diary of my journey, and a starting guide for the next joe. I'll be trying to write it as professionally as possible, but remember, this is just for a fan concert for my small local anime convention.

I have 5 generally broad questions I need to figure out how to make a show actually work and come together.

  1. How to project the vocaloid.

a.Rear Projection http://tinyurl.com/hybxo2s , http://tinyurl.com/he7hnv6

b. Peppers Ghost effect http://tinyurl.com/h6ger4v , http://tinyurl.com/jntufm9

c. 3d Pyramid http://tinyurl.com/jvduve9

d. stereoscopic projection https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b64LysZXMAg

  1. How many projectors.

I believe a Peppers Ghost effect only uses one. And typical miku concerts use 3 (1 center, 1 on either side I think anyways and I recently found a youtuber who was using 20 mini projectors to get a near true 3d https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b64LysZXMAg (I now know to be called stereoscopic projecting) It's actually pretty cool. As well as the 3d pyramid which typically I think uses 1 per side of the pyramid.

  1. What kind of projector.

a. How many Lumens do I need, how many Lumens is too much?

b. How big of a throw distance?

c. What native aspect ratio should it be.

d. How much am I willing to spend

  1. at what angle will the projectors be set at?

a. floor projection http://tinyurl.com/gwrzdbu

b. high projection http://tinyurl.com/zps6kku

  1. What kind of screen?

5a. what angle should the screen be at? (Peppers ghost and pyramid projections) From there, I believe it's a matter of adding on the accessories to a show, such as DMX lighting and secondary screens to display lyrics and backgrounds, and then the sound. DMX lighting I think should be more straightforward, but at the same time painfully frustrating too. http://tinyurl.com/hb8cak5 And as a note, don't get me wrong I know as a musician that the light show is 30% of the show for a rock group, and for a pop star its about probably more around 60%. But! I think I would like to get the foundation of just having a nice presentable hologram and then building on that.

So, the answer I have to my own questions, I think my will be...

Using the current already popular rear projection method

Using 2 projectors at either side (opting out center projector)

A short throw projector of some kind (Can't guarantee my panel room will have space either above or behind to support a theater projection)

A high projection setup (Can't guarantee my panel room will have a stage to project upwards, and I don't have the budget to build my own portable one)

Some kind of roll up material, (plastic, cloth, netting [ I would LOVE to use the fancy glass with I think what is called 'High Gain Rear Projection film' but I don't have a semi-truck to deliver a 7'X10' sheet of polycarbonate. So I still need to decide what projector I'm ultimatly going to land on, as well as the screen it projects on to. Which, sadly, are the two biggest questions of the 5, but that's why I'm here writing this out to ask for help.

So, here's where my Diary will start. From here on, it's going to be random thoughts and etc, until I figure out what I ultimately will land on.

When it comes to the projection, I guess I need to figure out the dimensions I'll be projecting at. I believe I want to be projecting on a 10ft long by 8ft high screen, So... I don't know how high I will want the projectors to be placed at, as well as high far apart I want each projector >< I know I ideally, I think, I want the projector to be placed about 5 feet behind the screen, so, atleast I know the Z axis. And, secondly, when it comes to the Y axis, I guess I don't want it to be any higher then 10-12 feet because I can't assume I will have too much room to work with, and as for the X axis... I don't know >< Maybe immediately behind whatever mechanism I am using to hold the screen up to so, 8' I'm guessing is my X axis unless someone else specifies something different. For the ratios, I believe I want to use 720p Resoultion with 16:9 aspect ratio, but how that works with a 8'X10' screen... I don't know >< I'll have to look into it.

One of my bandmates coworks actually happens to sell projectors! I didn't get much information off of him, but! he did direct me to http://www.projectorcentral.com/ to use their 'Search by Function' search engine button... machine. after entering my dimensions of my screen (a 8'X10' screen which has a diameter of 154') Led me to figuring out, I need a short throw projector with a throw of somewhere that looks to be 0.45:1 to 0.50:1. Neat! That's one less question I have to answer!

My budget is around 3,000$ I'd love to allocate 1000$ of that into DMX lights leaving 2,000 for the projectors and the screens.

As of 8/4/16 my current quest for a projector and screen to land on is!:

Projector:

Lumens: ?? Don't know if I will reach a point of it being too much. (I think I am planning on using two 3,000 Lumen projectors, equaling 6,000 projected lumens)

Range: Short Throw, Ranging from (0.45:1 to 0.50:1)

Resolution and Aspect Ratio: Ideally I think 1080p and 16:9 but in my budget I know I should shoot for 720p and 16:9

Currently considering projectors: https://www.amazon.com/In-Focus-IN124-DLP-Projector/dp/B005FJ28T2 And https://www.amazon.com/Acer-MR-JLX11-009-Projector/dp/B00YO5FF8O (Acer not 100% ideal with everything as is, but this two of them are offered on craigslist at a good price in a neighboring state)

Screen:

Type: Rear Projection

Size: 8'X10'

Angle: Straight

Material: ?? Still deciding.
