For which model turntable?

$100 isn't going to get you low bass.

Compact starter entry level 4" mid bass driver Edifier R1280DBs $159 for a smallish size room have RCA subwoofer output ("s" in the model name) so you can later add a powered subwoofer. JBL SUB 550 $599 $189 on sale. Or Dayon $155+ if the JBL sale is over or out of stock.

Or buy a better and larger pair of passive speakers $83 each x2 and a mini amp or stereo receiver or look for one or both similar used. Then add the subwoofer later.

A2+ are tiny 2.75" mid bass driver speakers. You could connect a subwoofer for lower bass.

For a desktop setup you could size up to 4" or 5.25". The 6.5" Diamond 225 may be too large unless you have a very large desk or place them on stands in front of your desk that is not up against a wall, sort of like a recording studio setup.

With separate amp and passive speakers you can later change or upgrade one part at a time.

Mini amps are small and are a basically what are inside powered speakers.

  • Ayima A01 Pro or other Ayima models.
  • Fosi Audio DA2120A mini amp adds digital inputs, USB input DAC for your computer and a remote or other Fosi or SMSL models.

Aiyima A01 and Aiyima A07 Pro both add Bluetooth, tone controls and a subwoofer output over the A07.

Or instead of the Art DJ Pre II a mini amp or stereo receiver with a built in phono preamp via the phono input:

You're missing speaker amplification!

The Angels Horn has built in speakers? Did you recently purchase it to use it with the tower speakers or you already had the turntable and want to add the tower speakers?

The turntable has a built in "phono preamp" that applies the RIAA EQ to the phono signal, it doesn't power passive speakers.

What is a phono preamp?

Turntable Setup Guide

To power the passive speakers get a Mini Amp, Mini Amp with DAC, Stereo Receiver, AV Receiver or Integrated Amp.

Plus Speaker Wire. Then How To Strip Speaker Wire and How to Install Speaker Wire.

If you splits the signal then you would need to adjust the volume on the subwoofer and the speakers separately or add a level control before the split which is not ideal either.

You could connect a subwoofer with speaker wire inputs wired to the main speaker or between the Edifier speakers.

Or upgrade to powered speakers that have an RCA subwoofer output or to passive speakers and a mini amp that has a 3.5mm line/subwoofer output.

A stereo or AV receiver will power the speakers.

A phono preamp doesn't power passive speakers.

If you already have a full size turntable and big speakers from the 70s then a full size stereo or AV receiver or integrated amp shouldn't seem to big.

You could stack the amp or receiver under the turntable with a riser shelf, spacers or a turntable stand.

Or you could connect powered speakers directly to the turntable.

If you don't want a full size class A/B receiver or amp you could get a compact class D mini amp.

Douk X1 is a class D solid state amp with tube buffers that are mostly just for show.

The older RT81 is not worth buying anymore since the newer upgraded RT82 for $50 more adds a $100 increase in performance and component value because it adds the new optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for much lower wow and flutter and speed variation and the speed won't drift since the sensor is monitoring the speed 400 times a second. The RT82 includes the OM10 cartrdige that is just as good as the newer version 2M Red on the RT83 so there is not much reason to get the RT83.

If you want lower cost then the AT-LPW30TK $329 $199 with a built in phono preamp instead of the RT80 or RT81.

Total budget is $600?

Options with powered speakers under $400 or around $500:

Separate amplification and passive speakers allows you to later upgrade one part at a time.

Connect either turntable to a mini amp or stereo or AV receiver:

  • Ayimia A01 Pro $59 mini amp plus the Bozak phono preamp if getting the RT82.
  • Fosi Audio DA2120A $125 mini amp adds digital inputs and a remote plus the Bozak phono preamp if getting the RT82.
  • Onkyo TX-8220 $199 stereo receiver has a built in phono preamp for the RT82.
  • Or if there is also a TV in the room an AV Receiver with 4K HDMI starting at $229+ and the Bozak phono preamp if getting the RT82 or $329+ with a Phono input for the RT82. Then you can now or later optionally add more speakers for movie and TV surround sound.

Passive speakers on sale in or over budget:

Or over budget floor standing towers, however then you don't need to buy or build speaker stands:

Plus speaker wire, pure copper oxygen free 16 AWG or optional thicker 14 AWG. Then How To Strip Speaker Wire and How to Install Speaker Wire.

Pass on the Yamaha R-S202 and 4" Klipsch R-41M speakers.
