Balm is more like a creamy moisturizer and won't hold much shape at all. For a handlebar you need a really stiff wax. I use Can You Handlebar - Secondary which works great. It's pretty hard and warming it a bit with a hair dryer helps get it out of the tin and onto your whiskers.

So far the strongest I’ve found. Use a hair dryer to heat both wax and your fingers slightly, and I usually style then hit the stache with the hair dryer to soften it up again before combing out. Lastly pinch the tips to a point. The comb out will help with stache thickness as well.
