I understand that my m40x are rather neutral while the dt770s are more vshaped but I honestly haven't tried any other type of audiophile grade headphones so I'm not even really sure what I like or not.
Please just straight up ignore all the nonsensical marketing material. Audio Technica calls these headphones neutral for some god forsaken reason. They aren't. They have a bass boost and some extra upper treble as well.
The DT 770 is indeed a bit more v shaped and has some tuning oddities, all in all I don't think they sound great. Everything else is pretty great about them though. The DT 700 Pro X is more expensive but sounds significantly better.
The AKG K361/K371 are also great but not quite as durable.
Will I need a dac to properly run the 80 ohm version or can I just run them straight out of my pc? I found this bundle on amazon but that's for an amp not a dac and if I am understanding correctly those really don't do the same thing. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.
An amp is what you need when headphones need more power. A DAC is something every digital device with an analog output (like a headphone jack) has because it transforms a digital signal into an analog converter. You don't need a DAC, some people buy them because dedicated ones have better audio quality but these days build in ones are usually perfectly good and buying an extra one kind of mostly a waste of money.
But no, the 80 Ohm version shouldn't need an amp.
