Sabrent PS5 cover. - this is to Amazon.
I heard that the 980 Pros that are currently being sold by retailers (specifically Amazon) contain the firmware update I had to get back in February. If you bought it from outside Amazon, the same may be true. If you need to do the update, it's not as difficult as you might think. I had never done anything like that prior to getting the drive.
A heatsink is necessary. Without one, the SSD will overheat and the PS5 will shut down and display a message saying the PS5 is shutting down due to the SSD overheating. A heatsink is also necessary in order to increase the durability of the drive. If it's constantly running on high temperatures, it will degrade faster than it should. You can use any heatsink, but for the 980 Pro, I'd recommend the Sabrent PS5 SSD heatsink cover, which is about 20 bucks at most retailers (Amazon has a special 5% off coupon with it), or the ElecGear PS5 SSD heatsink cover, which costs a bit more (30 bucks on Amazon). These are easier to apply, especially the Sabrent one. I still use the Sabrent one and it works perfectly and I never got an overheating message from the PS5.
If your 980 Pro came with a heatsink, that's fine. You can just plug it in without having to add anything else to it. But if it doesn't (mine did not), then I recommend applying one or getting a heatsink cover, which tests from NASCompares showed the heatsink covers did a better job of keeping the console and SSD cooler than a regular heatsink did. I also don't recommend double heatsinking, as the heatsink cover cannot cool down an SSD already encased in a heatsink.
I went with the Sabrent Heatsink..no complaints
SABRENT M.2 NVMe Heatsink for The PS5 Console (SB-PSHS) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09HSQQWCL/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_ZZ1VA0Q607ST22HRHMQ3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
If you're talking about the 980 Pro, the version you purchased does not come with a heatsink. You'll need one for the PS5. Again, I recommend the Sabrent PS5 SSD heatsink cover or the PNY XLR8 PS5 SSD heatsink cover. They're pretty easy to install. Those SSD covers replaces the internal SSD cover that the PS5 comes with. It'll keep your console from overheating.
