If you're connecting a battery to a live circuit then you will always get a spark. At some point when making the final connection as you bring the terminals together the voltage will overcome the resistance of the air gap, arc across it and that's a spark. That being said, you should have a battery disconnect switch so the system's easier and safer to work on. There will still be a spark inside the switch though.
