Why should you read it?

  • If you're a nerd and a parent
  • If you're a nerd who has parents
  • If you want a change of pace from the common solo protagonists of the genre
  • If you like fiction that takes an irrational premise and tries to work out all the detailed rational implications
  • If you like drama, adventure, tension, and a little bit of comedy
  • If you've already read book 1 and now you're desperate to know what happens to Meghan and the kids next!

Okay, fine. Here goes:

So, we all know what happens to the young twentysomething gamer dudes during system apocalypses, but what about everyone else? The grandparents, the parents, the six-year-olds, the vast mass of humanity?

If you don't have anything holding you down, you can just put your life on the line and min-max like crazy, but when people are relying on you, you have to act differently. Think differently. In a lot of stories, it's almost like the real world is erased and rewritten with a game world. That can be fun! But I really wanted to explore what happens when the real world and the game world merge. I wanted to see the little things.

Most especially, as a parent, I wanted to see the kids. Kids in apocalyptic scenarios are a hard topic. I totally understand why many stories have the heartless system suddenly has a heart when it comes to children, or why other stories ignore children's existence entirely. But I wanted to go there. I wanted to ask those questions:

  • What happens when your three-year-old can punch through a door?
  • How do you convince your six-year-old not to take a full melee build and dive headfirst into monsters' teeth? Should you stop him, if it looks like he'll be really good at that?
  • Every parent tries to raise their kids to be good people, but how do you hold onto that when you're in a life-and-death situation, and kindness has a real cost? Do you hold onto that?

If you're not interested in the answers, you're not interested in my series. But if you are... Check out Apocalypse Parenting.
