I bought these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KBPTHJN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 1 inch thick, 72 square feet for $75. That's $1.05 per square feet, much cheaper than the $6 per square feet for the nice mats. To be clear, the nice mats are much nicer but also quite expensive. 72 square feet is enough for a decent-ish roll. They're also a little firm so maybe avoid the hard takedowns.
As a hack, I bought four Amazon Basics yoga mats (https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Extra-Thick-Exercise-Carrying) to put underneath the puzzle mats for extra padding. Then they're about the same softness as a normal mat.
Pro of all of this is that it's portable. I could fit these in a normal car and drive them around, but I definitely can't fit a 10' x 10' in my sedan.
