We got lucky with crate training. The night we brought our boy home when it was time for bed, we put him in his crate in our bedroom and all went to bed together. We turned out the lights, then as we layed in bed, my boyfriend and I had a soothing-sounding conversation for 5-10 minutes so he would hear we were there, being calm, casual and also going to bed. He whined for maybe 30 seconds then slept through the night. He has slept through the night every night since then (he's 6 months now).
We always give him a treat when he goes into his crate - at night he gets 3 small treats from each of us and if we crate him during the day he gets the rubber Kong Goodie Bone stuffed with his treats, sealed with a smidge of almond butter. He LOVES going in his crate. When he sees us getting the bone out he runs into his crate and lays down with excitement. It's pretty cute. We made his crate super cozy from day one with a memory foam dog bed with a towel on top it and his favorite lovey stuffed animal. We have never used his crate for time outs or punishment - for that we use his pen. This is our first dog and I'm not sure it's so easy for everyone but it's what has worked for us!
Here are the things that have helped us along the way:
This border collie training book was super helpful for us in the beginning: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1847978894/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
36" crate with divider: https://www.amazon.com/MidWest-Folding-Divider-Protecting-Leak-Proof/dp/B000QFT1R2/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=kong%2Bcrate&qid=1646377092&sr=8-3&th=1
Perfectly sized dog bed: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B086148895/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Kong goodie bone (they also have a puppy one): https://www.amazon.com/KONG-KB31-Goodie-Bone-Small/dp/B0009YD8AG/ref=sr_1_1?crid=33JQISU6QXW9V&keywords=kong+goodie+bone+puppy&qid=1646377760&s=pet-supplies&sprefix=kong+goodie+bone+%2Cpets%2C128&sr=1-1
Instead of disposable ones, get two washable pee pads and change them out. Use the 15 minute wash cycle. These are awesome. Your puppy can't rip them up: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CHY38KP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Using "potty bells" has given our guy a clear way of telling us when he needs to go potty: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06WPBC4WK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Also, we quickly figured out our boy INHALED his food if we put it in a bowl. This Kong has been tremendous - we fill it with his kibble and spread a thin layer of almond butter over the top. It's like an ice cream cone for dogs! Our guy loves pushing it around with his nose and it slows his eating way down. We put him in his pen with it so its in a contained area and leave the door open for him: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004NSVIRY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Here's the pen: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002908DX0?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details
This was the first harness we used for him once he could go on walks, recommended in our puppy class: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000OGLHHA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Once he grew out of it we switched to this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079ZBKZRN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Lastly, because he's a BC he'll likely be a natural (we introduced this at about 4mo old): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00486UC4G?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details
