I admit that it's possible that the "v2" nomenclature is somehow unique to Amazon, but then I have no idea how to tell these two shoes apart.

I don't think this has anything to do with the freshfoam sport. I have never worried about New Balance model numbers before this week and figured this sub would know much more than me.

I'm glad to hear the original 574s are available somewhere! But I can't find my size/color on Amazon, Zappos, newbalance.com or the first few google results for "online shoe store". There is one ebay listing that might be legit at a > 50% premium. I'm used to just ordering from Amazon, is there a better online shoe store I should be giving my New Balance business too? I can't find what I'm looking for on Amazon
