Since that's an eMTA I am assuming you have phone service from Comcast? If so, you won't be able to buy your own. Though, what /u/CrazyKiller5150 is getting at is that a modem that supports additional bonded channels will generally see less issues with congestion during peak times. In your case that modem already supports 8 downstream channels, but It is possible to get some that go up to 16.

If I'm wrong and you just have internet and got stuck with one of those crappy boxes I'd recommend purchasing your own. Not only because those all-in-one boxes suck, but it will also save you money on your bill. I'd personally go with the SB6183

Thanks for the advice! Would you mind giving me your opinions on the modems and routers I'm considering?

Router: the D-Link DIR-860L IEEE 802.11ac Wireless Router ($30) vs. the TP-Link AC1200 Wireless Wi-Fi Dual Band Fast Ethernet Router (Archer C50) ($50)? The TP-Link is a brand I've read a lot about, but it seems silly to pay $20 more if the D-Link will be just as good.

Modem: the ARRIS SURFboard SB6141 ($70) or the ARRIS SURFboard SB6183 ($90) (again, debating whether $20 is worth it for a piece of equipment that I've heard more about but to me seems pretty identical).

I have a SB6183 and it's really nice. Late 90's I was still doing dial-up.

Well, I doubt you'll find a modem/router combo for $100 or less..

I'd got the separate modem + router route.. for the modem either the Netgear CM500-1AZNAS, or the Arris SB6183

and for the router, something like a D-Link DIR 878.. this is an AC 1200 class router that supports MU-MIMO which is important if you have multiple WiFi devices in use..

Now I am not all that familiar with FIOS but I do believe that you can use your own router so whatever router you get, so long as it supports gigabit ethernet, you can use it with whatever service you end up with after your move.

I use an Arris SB6183. One quick phone call to tech support for them to put the MAC address in their system and no problems afterwards. $60 on Amazon after coupon.

Is this the modem we're looking for?

Oh, crap. Just read it requires cable. I just have ATT.
