A hair dryer would not work as a heat gun. They blow too much of a gust air and only get up to around 140° F. Heat guns get at least 500° F and the gust of air coming out of them is very low. They suggest to use them 6 inches away from what you are working on to give you an idea of how they are not just blasting across the room like a hair dryer would.
