What I am talking about is something like what I have which is Nux Mighty Plug 2 which had default presets (without app), but with app you can fiddle with guitar effects and sound settings. I have a really nice spacey sounding profile.
I also recommend the Fender Mustang Micro. It doesnt have an app, but overall it sounds noticeably better especially when there is overdrive and distortion. It falls flat with the effects though.

Note that these are non-traditional tools and their convenience comes at a cost to other qualities and features. Since you are a beginner, the best thing to do is find something that interests you and supports what like the most. Dont fret too much about hardware. If you want the best guitar sounds/quality/character, you are best off with a good traditional amp.
As far straps go, I think they are a must. Get a comfortable one (not made out of nylon or some other harsh material). Im of the opinion that you are making it harder on yourself as a beginner by not using a strap. I use a strap even when sitting down sometimes. It so that you dont have to do the additional work of "carrying" the guitar (keeping the neck up etc) while playing.
