I've tried and use a few different inexpensive and DIY options (shop lights, 6500k compact florescent, cheap screw-in LED bulbs with the diffuser removed, red/blue grow lights). All of these options can grow compact succulents. For my amateur ass, the challenge has been providing ENOUGH bright light rather than the "correct" light. That being said, there are new and inexpensive options that I haven't tried. The houseplant hobby exploded during the pandemic, and that market has started to catch up.

Not surprisingly, my succs look and grow differently depending on light source. These days, I've combined together my 6500k shop lights, (I modified old/free florescent fixtures), vivid BLURPLE! lights. and more shop lights (5000k) (got these really cheap, why not). Things I noticed: 6500k shop lights alone make them grow rather fast, but the stress colors are all over the map. Some turn really green (lost their colors) while others do turn colorful... which, while interesting and fun to look at, are often different than when grown in natural sunlight. Some succs grow really awesome flowers under shop lights, and certain succs grow aerial roots non-stop. For me, the blurple lights alone make slower growing but healthy and natural-looking succs. Problem with these is I hate being in the same room as the eye-searing purple laser show. Whenever I hang with my succs, those lights get switched off IMMEDIATELY. 6500k compact florescent bulbs worked well all around, but they are less efficient and almost impossible to find now. I still use them with some of my tropicals.
