The Before pic is from a few years ago, the After pic is from today. I used to get my hair buzzed the same length all over once every 2-3 months. Now I get my hair cut at a great place (if anyone lives near Bellevue, WA, I can give them the place, it's awesome) and know exactly what to tell them.
You guys are the reason I figured out that I could do more with my hair, and were a good source for finding exactly what I liked. My girlfriend also played a pretty big part in that and helped me actually get the confidence to go try to get a haircut like this. I did actually work my way up to this, going shorter and shorter on the sides while growing it longer and longer on top. My barber gave me advice as I went - they started out with a fade on the sides at first, while the top was growing longer, then finally went to a full buzz on the sides when the top was long enough (probably down to about my lower eyelids if I pulled it down).
For product, I use Bedhead Matte Separation Wax and Tresemme Tres Two Extra Hold hairspray. If you have any specific questions about technique, I'm happy to answer!
I'm using this:

Took a while to find one that works for me, but this one is great. Has a great hold while not being too firm. I only put it in a couple of days a week. The rest, I simply shower, then put a brush through it and it still holds pretty well.
Hey ya!
I would recommend a lighter wax that doesn't heavy down your hair. I've used some products from a few companies and I can recommend you a few!
I liked BedHeads separation wax a lot actually. It feels really light in your hair, and it just feels naturally good! The hold isn't crazy strong, but enough if you have shorter hair. http://www.amazon.com/TIGI-Head-Matte-Separation-Ounce/dp/B002N5MI2S
For something SUPER strong, and I do mean SUPER, I've used this product from Hanz de Fuko and it's unbelievably strong. Unlike anything I have used. It doesn't heavy your hair, It holds the whole day and I can't describe it's texture because there's nothing like it haha! It's called quicksand, and it has a dry/matte finish to it so it looks likes there is nothing in your hair. It holds like a champ, but I wouldn't recommend it if your hair gets dry/brittle since the dry look from the wax and your hair can make your hair look unhealthy(I have personal experience, and dried to the max hair sucks.) I've had this 2oz tub since late November and I still have about half of it to use, since with this thing using little does a massive amount! https://www.hanzdefuko.com/shop/quicksand
Also, I would look into Mr.Pompadour. They have some neat waxes that are healthy for your hair and gives strong hold (There are some videos on youtube that show you what the vary waxes can do). The sculpting clay is what they recommended me when I contacted them, and it has a mediumish hold with a matte finish (again looking like there is nothing in your hair. Awesome!). You can check them out and see what you like if you have time. http://mister-pompadour-friend-refers.herokuapp.com/?ref=f71c575b65
Anyways, just a good strong wax can never do you wrong. Find what's best with your hair type and style and stick with it.
Bless!
You have a lot of length going on. See if you can't leave some of the length on top, taking in the sides a fair amount, to achieve something more like Chris Hemsworth.
Otherwise, go significantly shorter on the sides and keep some of the length on top — definitely scissor cut/texture on top is necessary.
Also, you need some sort of product to put in your hair to keep it up out of your face and back. I have fine hair like you — I use this wax. It works great for a matte finish, and it does a great job at giving a casual style but having enough hold to keep a casual style.
Definitely need a haircut and product. Best of luck!
