I have a floss pad, ceramic rings, and a Filtrx pack. I also use sludge destroyer, and water conditioner from API Turtle and Flukers Eco Clean for water changes.

I think it takes about three months to require cleaning for the canister filter. And every week I refill the water that evaporates.
