I'm not really looking at spending $500 on a pair of fullrangers. This was just a curiosity and I wanted to see if anyone else has ever seen or played with these speakers (or any model from this brand)...
I agree 100% with your conclusions.
Also, I already have a pair of 6.5" Dayton PS180-8 and pair of 8" Dayton PS220-8 from another project that I will likely use with the SET amp I just bought. Both are fairly high efficiency and I would run either in a 2-way with a tweeter as well as a discrete subwoofer crossed with a MiniDSP.
I'm thinking about building a pair of these, only instead of using the "JA8008" driver, use my Dayton PS220-8 in its place. Their specs are quite close, IMO. I wouldn't expect identical results to Mr Gravesen's results, but should be in the same ballpark, which is to say pretty damn good performance.
I did pick up a pair of these Xizi Audio 5" full ranger design which looks more/less identical to the 10" driver design, but at a far more palpable price of $85/pair. It is also available via Prime, so if they're horrible I can just send it back.
