I recommend the Kotto with the HEPA filter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZHH5H7N?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

Works great for my need and budget friendly. You probably should also get an air purifier for the room, just an option but it helps cut down the flux and other stuff like dust IMO. With the Kotto fume extractor and air purifier I rarely smell any flux in the room and it's a small space about 100sqft with only 1 Window and it's cold now so I don't open it. You can wear a 3M respirator that the painter use but if you have family members around you should consider something that filter instead of just blowing the fume around.

I upgraded to this ($80) a couple of months ago, and am pretty happy with it. It's not going to catch 100$ of the fumes, but does a good job, and is position-able, which makes it better than this one ($30) that I started out with. If you can only afford the cheaper one, it's still better than nothing!

Using a drip system was definitely in the plan, was going to use a tub with a drain hole cut in the lid and a small pond or aquarium pump for my diy solution (shipping things is expensive in the far north where I live).

I took a quick look at the wen products and they're pretty heavy duty and expensive. Since I'm working with small pieces exclusively atm I was considering trying out a slightly cheaper solution with a Kotto strong suction fume and smoke system such as at the following Amazon listing https://www.amazon.com/KOTTO-Soldering-Absorber-Electric-Extractor/dp/B07ZHH5H7N/ but I'm not sure if it's be up to the task.

Working in my apartment I have to be considerate of noise levels and space constraints, which is why I'd considered the Kotto system (55db) though I note the wen system I looked at is comparable for noise. I did recognize that I'll need to modify the filter to address the extra dust, likely using a cut vacuum bag or furnace filter.

The wen system I found does not seem to have the direct suction system of the Kotto system I linked. Is there one I missed that maybe I should look at?

In the end I might just have to spend the money on the more appropriate system, and the wen would be nice for cleaning the air of allergens as well (I have tons of allergies)...

Thanks for the input

Get a fume extractor. I use this one, but there are cheaper ones too.

I have one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZHH5H7N

Have not tried any others, but it seems to do the job, especially with an open window.

i have a yihua 959D hot air station and it works. but i have nothing else to compare it to.

personally if your on a very limited budget id say go for it, as you will get most of a starter kit.

in addition to whats in the kit, you should definately buy, some solder wick, a tub of rosin no clean flux,

if you have asthma or another breathing problem you probably should get a fume extractor. heres the one i have, but i only use it when using the sal amoniac as the smell is slightly irritating to me https://www.amazon.com/KOTTO-Soldering-Absorber-Electric-Extractor/dp/B07ZHH5H7N

some optional things that i use HIGHLY recommend:

  • desoldering pulp, eventually grab a nice one like the engeneer SS-02, but at the beginning anything is better then nothing here
  • some micro swabs to apply the flux (i get mine off ebay, for your first buy grab one in a plastic holder, then refill that with the bagged ones
  • a natural bristle paint brush (from anywhere, mines a 1-1/2 inch brush),
  • some rags (i get mine from harbor freight, and wash them when done.),
  • and 90% or better isopropyl alcohol (from your nearby drug store (i get 91% from walgreens and put it in a spray bottle))
  • and lastly also grab a block of sal ammoniac for later on as it is AMAZING for cleaning up your tips.
  • you may also want some 1mm and 1.2mm or larger solder, i use 1.2mm solder to tin my irons tip. but not much else, my go to solder is the 1mm solder but i mostly do retro game repairs. so the pads are generally pretty big

to use the brush, i saturate the brush with the alcohol and spray the surface i want to clean too, and use the brush to clean/loosen any flux on the boasrd and wipe the rest off with the cloth. when the brush gets sticky i clean with dawn or some other dish detergent.

to use solder wick, dip it in the flux, and then use your iron to wick away the solder.

personally i use the same formula of solder that comes with that kit (SN 99.3%/CU 0.7% for all my soldering.and dont touch the leaded stuff)
