I have seen some other people comment this, but if you got a basic fountian pen like the Lamy Safari or even several cheeper ones like the Platinum Preppy you could fill them with a variety of inks both based on colour and property, while you can figure out what most inks have as property the Golet Pen Company (no affiliation, except a big fan) has a great chart of the diffrent properties of Noodler's Inks, while is it not compressive to other companies, it is a great place to start. They also have a lot of ink reviews, and swabs to compare the colours of the inks.

Also if you'd prefre not to use a fountain pen, there are some refillable rollerball pens that you can get.

I keep a supply of retractable PaperMate Ink Joy Medium Point (0.7mm) around, but I prefer to use a fountain pen for the most part. I'm not a fan of affectation, so it's taken me a while to find pens that write well but aren't ostentatious.

I have several Lamy AlStar and Safari pens and swap them out depending on the ink color or line weight I'm looking for.

I also recently picked up a Kaweco Sport pen and really, really like it. It's really small when it's not posted, so it fits in my pocket and seems to be as bulletproof as the Lamy pens.

Also, make sure you grab converters for the pens so you can have more flexibility with ink. I prefer anything that Noodler makes...Heart of Darkness is my goto.

I'll interpret "guy stuff" as "EDC stuff".

Bonus item: This isn't under $30, but $45 wil buy you a Leatherman Skeletool, which is one of the most universally useful items I own.

Edit: "EDC" stands for Every Day Carry. To paraphrase the /r/EDC sidebar, EDC means the essentials that I carry a daily basis. Things that I either use every day, or want to have with me in case I might need them. Sorry for the confusion, /u/ForgottenEcho and /u/Sanctitas.
