I have a small magnifier with croc clips like this that I've tried to use for soldering, but the lens is small so you're basically peeping through with one eye (thus losing depth perception), plus the clips can be fiddly.

So I recently bought one of those angle-poise LED magnifiers, like this. (I'm in Japan, but the closest thing I could find on Amazon US was this.) The lens is big enough that I can look through with both eyes, and the LED light is a big help. Much more useful for detailed work. I would recommend trying to get the largest lens diameter you can find.

No clamps of course, but I can place the little guy with the croc clips under the big magnifier if I need to hold something.
