Go to your local dollar store and pick up a few herbs. You probably already have them but basil, rosemary cinnamon, cardamom if you can find it, bay leaves all make a good start. Feel free to play around with any herb you find. Examine blends for common magical correspondences. Pumpkin pie spice is a ready made love blend, some of your steak rubs are great for protection.

Once you're more financially stable (basil and dill are great allies for this btw) look into some basic more "witchy" herbs like rue, calendula, maybe mugwort. You'll find a few like that that have properties that are hard to find elsewhere.

You'd be surprised what you can find in the tea isle at walmart too.
